Jonathan Winfrey Photography
Jonathan Winfrey, a prolific action film director, lives in Hollywood. He began photographing manhole covers in 2007. His dedication to capture the range of metal qualities with the sun reflecting various angles evokes an ethereal presence when taking a photograph. His simple, accurate, and compulsive sense as a visual communicator, whether as a director or a photographer, has led him around the world in his pursuit of the human condition and the industrial typological footprint often overlooked. Influenced by the I Ching and ancient Chinese philosophy, Winfrey envisions manhole covers as a connection between the infinite of the earth and the unconscious beneath the city he visits when working. This collection is his first public display of the manhole cover photo project.
