Brian Kuhlmann & Joslyn Beta Lawrence
Song of Absolution was created as a reconnection to the natural world within the confines of living in an urban environment. The title refers both to the lyrical nature of the work and the redemptive quality that became a part of the process in creating it.
Kuhlmann and Lawrence have been collaborating for over 7 years both in commercial and fine art photography. Lawrence comes from a painting background and is inspired by the stark disappearing landscapes of her youth, while Kuhlmann brings an urban perspective to the work. Shifting from a Midwestern landscape to the Southern California desert has inspired them to expand upon the ‘Song’ series and to continue to push the printing process, creating work that feels painterly and unique. Currently, they are interested in identifying indigenous trees of California and preserving them through the traditional portraiture aspect of their work.
